It can also be the obsessive practice of some behavior such as gambling. Any type of addiction can certainly affect your life - spiritually, mentally and physically - as well as your family and friends.

There are five steps that a person can take to break an addiction. Although these steps do not replace the advice or assistance of a professional counselor, support group or psychologist, it can help direct you on the right track to overcome it.

Step 1. Admit that you have a problem. Acknowledging that you have a problem helps you to get a perspective on the situation.

Step 2. Realize that you need help in overcoming the addiction. Depending on what the addiction is, it may be difficult to go cold turkey and just stop. It may require a professional or products, such as the smokers patch, that will help wean you from the substance or behavior that you are dependent on.

Step 3. Get treatment. While in treatment, you will focus on what is causing this addiction and how to put an end to it.

Step 4. Join a support group. By having a support system in place, you maintain what you have learned and learn new positive behaviors from others who can help you when you have cravings or desire for the substance or behavior. Also, you should make sure that you have a support system of people that you love and trust who will not enable you.

Step 5. Keep a journal of your progress. A journal will allow you to record your feelings as you work through ending the addiction. You are able to look back at your journey to recovery. This will show you just how you have grown over time and your previous thought process

Millions of Americans deal with addictions everyday including food, sex and video games. It takes courage and strength mentally to put an end to addictive habits. But to have a healthy long life to obtain the destiny that is planned for you, it is worth it.
