Can You Keep A Promise To Your Self?

February 8, 2010 15:42 by Angela

At the beginning of a new year, many people make resolutions to change or improve something about their self and/or life. Resolutions are those promises that we make to do something different in our life and achieve results. But as the year progress, it becomes harder to stay committed to those promises. We lose focus and forget all about the list of things that we agreed to do. We slip right back into our old habits and give up before we really even started.

Keeping promises require commitment and determination. You must be loyal and honest to your self. You must have a drive inside of you that is so forceful that you do not easily surrender to the challenges that come your way. Here are a few questions you should ask your self when it comes to keeping promises:

1.  Do I keep my word? Some people know how to talk a good game. But there is no substance to the words that they speak. It is as though they are letting out a bunch of hot air. As a self check, pay attention to the next time you promise to return a call to see if you actually do it or forget.

2.Am I dependable? Many people offer assistance with good intentions to do it. But some things comes up that may not be preventable or there is a change of heart that is due to a more comfortable situation or a better event. As a self check, pay attention when you offer to do something and then change your mind.

3.Do I make excuses? Excuses are reasons to procrastinate or to put off doing something. They can hinder us from moving forward to reach goals. As a self check, pay attention to when you make an excuse not to do something and note if it actually get completed.

Let this year be a different. We need to start to follow through on the things that we are promising ourselves in just the same way that we would if we were making promises to someone else.
